Italy: Naples police blast anti-Renzi protesters with water cannon
Activists clashed with police in Naples, Wednesday, during a protest against the visit of Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi to the southern port city.
Police used water cannon and tear gas to deter activists, who threw fireworks, bottles and stones at police officers in riot gear. According to reports, 11 police officers were injured in the clashes, although only one had to be transferred to hospital for treatment.
Renzi visited Naples to discuss a project for the urban development of a former industrial site in the city. Protesters opposed the plans as they believe the local community had not been adequately consulted.
