UK: Former FM advocates 'Vote Leave' the EU for future of NHS

United Kingdom, London
April 6, 2016 at 18:30 GMT +00:00 · Published

Former UK Foreign Secretary Lord David Owen spoke in favour of the campaign to leave the European Union in Westminster Tower, London, on Wednesday. His comments focused on the future of the NHS, as he sees it, if the UK were to remain an EU member state.

Owen claimed that continued EU membership would result in the UK's National Health Service becoming "ever more involved with EU competition, procurement law and marketization."

He went on to say that, were the UK to leave the EU, the British people would have more control over their NHS, saying "We will restore legal powers and democratic control of the NHS to voters in the UK, if they vote 'Leave' - as I hope they will do - on June. If that happens, we will be able to protect our NHS from EU interference."

An EU referendum is scheduled to take place on June 23. Supporters of the 'Brexit' campaign include Leader of UKIP Nigel Farage, Mayor of London Boris Johnson, and UK Justice Minister Michael Gove.
