Russia: Zenit Arena will be a 'fantastic stadium' - FIFA's Smith

Russian Federation, St Petersburg
April 5, 2016 at 17:08 GMT +00:00 · Published

FIFA's Competitions Director Colin Smith inspected the progress of the construction works on the new Zenit Arena football stadium in St Petersburg on Tuesday. The stadium will be one of the venues used for the 2017 Confederations Cup and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, both hosted by Russia.

The FIFA representative was shown the work being done on the exterior, the inside of the stadium and also on the stands, where the first rows of seats were already installed. In a press conference held shortly upon the inspection, Smith expressed satisfaction with the progress seen to date, adding that the Zenit Arena "will be a fantastic stadium" once construction is completed.

Smith also stated that FIFA's monitoring commission collaborates closely with the Russian Local Organising Committee and the city of St Petersburg, further adding that the monitoring will continue in the months to come.

The construction expenses on the stadium are said to have officially exceeded one billion USD (€877 million), causing several budget adjustments and making the new FC Zenit St Petersburg stadium one of the most expensive stadiums in the world.

The 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup will take place in Russia one year before the 2018 FIFA World Cup . The competition will involve eight countries, including the current world champions and host country. The 2018 FIFA World Cup will be staged at 12 stadiums in 11 Russian cities: Moscow, St Petersburg, Kazan, Sochi, Nizhny Novgorod, Saransk, Kaliningrad, Volgograd, Yekaterinburg, Samara and Rostov-on-Don.
