Russia: Russia's Federal Archival Agency working to upgrade storage space
The Head of Russia's Federal Archival Agency Andrei Artizov met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Novo-Ogaryovo in the Moscow region, Monday, to report on the upgrading of archival storage space. Artizov reported that 24 kilometres of racks have already been upgraded in St. Petersburg alone.
The Head of Russia's Federal Archival Agency stated that the immense job of upgrading storage will concentrate on the "restoration of fire alarms and security." Artizov noted that "for all 70 years of the Soviet power a total of only 118,000 square metres of archives were built," adding that "in the 15 years from 2000 to 2015, 88,000 square metres of archives were put into service at the federal level."
In answer to the level of development of archival affairs in Russia, Artizov stated that Russia now has "federal archives in St. Petersburg, in Moscow and even in Siberia."
Putin also informed Artizov that "due to the fact that the materials your institution holds represent a special value for the state, the decision was taken to on subordinating the Agency directly to the President."
The raising of protection against fire is particularly important after a fire broke out in the Russian Defence Ministry office in Moscow on Sunday. More than 200 firefighters were involved in fighting the fire for nine hours, with around 50 people evacuated to safety.
