France: Clashes erupt in Rennes against labour reforms

France, Rennes
March 31, 2016 at 11:09 GMT +00:00 · Published

Clashes broke out between protesters and police in Rennes on Thursday, as demonstrators marched against the proposed labour reforms put forward by the government.

It is estimated that around 10,000 demonstrators took to the streets of the French city, where they lit flares and hurled objects at riot police who retaliated by charging at the demonstrators and deploying tear gas. According to the city's police department, 12 people were detained of whom three were slightly injured.

More than 200 demonstrations and rallies against the labour reforms were organised across France on Thursday.

The government's far-reaching reforms will look at almost all aspects of France's labour laws; maximum working hours, holidays and breaks among other areas will be open to negotiation as the government attempts to liberalise France's labour market. French President Francois Hollande is said to be attempting to lower the country's unemployment rate below 10 percent.
