Syria: Russian attack helicopter hits Islamic State positions near Palmyra
Russia's Ministry of Defence released footage, Thursday, showing a Mil Mi-28 attack helicopter hitting an Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) arms depot outside Palmyra earlier in March.
The helicopter can be seen hitting what is believed to be an arms cache, located in the north-east suburb of Palmyra.
According to the Russian Defence Ministry, IS had gathered up to 4,000 fighters, around 25 tanks, 40-plus mortars and other hardware in Palmyra and its suburbs. IS had also wired 10 trucks with explosive devices which were designed for suicide bomb attacks.
That was to no avail after the Syrian Army and opposition fighters forced IS out of the city last Sunday with the support of Russia’s air force.
