Libya: Fighting in Tripoli ahead of UN-backed unity govt. leaders’ arrival
Fighting reportedly broke out across Tripoli, early Wednesday, as leaders of Libya’s new UN-backed 'unity government' arrived by boat to start their administrative duties from the city's naval base.
Explosions and gunfire were heard across the city early on Wednesday, although it was not clear who was involved in the fighting. Smoke was seen rising over the city later in the day as armed militants patrolled the city in pick-up trucks.
The self-declared government in Tripoli opposes the UN-brokered deal, which is aimed at reconciling the nation after years of internal conflict; while some of the armed factions in the city reportedly warned the new unity government not to move into Tripoli.
The Government of National Accord was formed under the aegis of the United Nations in December 2015 in order to resolve the country’s political divisions.
