Russia: Russian specialists to help restore Palmyra - Hermitage Museum director

Russian Federation, St. Petersburg

Russian archaeologists will take part in the international campaign run by UNESCO to restore Palmyra, stated Director of St. Petersburg's Hermitage Museum Mikhail Piotrovski, Monday. The announcement comes after the Syrian Arab Army with Russian air assistance liberated the site from Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) militants on Sunday.

Piotrovski explained that from the moment the city fell to militants "with our colleagues, the archaeologists, we started thinking about what can be done". He said "museum workers around the world launched a campaign to collect materials about Palmyra and were preparing for that moment when it would be liberated."

He added that the Hermitage's contribution to the Palmyra restoration "will be in demand" as it has many specialists. Several experts including Piotrovski himself have experience in working in "ancient cities, in restoration, reconstruction and converting these cities into museums".

Palmyra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, formerly known for housing some of the best-preserved monuments of antiquity anywhere in the world. Since capturing the city, IS militants have blown up the 2,000-year-old Temple of Bel, and the Arch of Triumph, and have used the Roman-era amphitheatre for filmed public executions. The UN's cultural agency described the groups' archaeological demolishing as a 'war crime.'
