Yemen: Deadly IS-claimed suicide attacks leave Aden in disarray

Yemen, Aden
March 26, 2016 at 15:14 GMT -00:00 · Published

Debris and rubble were still visible on the streets of Aden, Saturday, after three suicide bombers hit security checkpoints in the southern Yemeni city on Friday, killing at least 20 people. The so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL) have since claimed responsibility for the attack.

In the first strike, some 14 soldiers and civilians were reportedly killed after an ambulance loaded with explosives was detonated at military checkpoint in Aden's north-western Buraiqa district. Two other bombs were detonated along a road leading to a military base manned by soldiers from the Saudi-led coalition currently operating in Yemen. A reported 12 people died in the attack. Concrete numbers have yet to be confirmed.

The attack marks one year since the Saudi-led military coalition launched its assault on Yemen in a bid to restore President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi to power after he was ousted by Houthi forces.

The Saudi-led coalition includes eight other Arab states and is receiving logistical support from the United States, Britain and France. The UN estimates that the violence has resulted in a dramatic increase in civilian casualties, with more than 6,300 people killed in Yemen since Saudi-led coalition air-strikes commenced in March 2015.

Since the military incursion, militant cells linked to IS and Al-Qaida have sprung up amidst the country's instability, carrying out attacks on both civilians and political figures. On December 6, 2015, IS claimed responsibility for the attack and subsequent killing of the Governor of Aden Jaafar Mohammed Saad.
