Russia: Lavrov, Steinmeier hold joint press conference on Ukraine, Syria

Russian Federation, Moscow

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held a joint press conference with his German counterpart Frank-Walter Steinmeier following their meeting in Moscow, Wednesday.

While commenting on the alleged Russian troops in eastern Ukraine, Lavrov stated that "the Ukrainian side wants to justify its inability to fulfill what it has signed for, with references to complicated security situation, to the mythic presence of the Russian troops, up to 40,000 soldiers."No proof or evidence has ever been provided by anyone but this disinformation is circulating in the mass media as we can see it today," he added. Moreover, Lavrov pointed out that "nobody is hiding the presence of military personnel of NATO member states."

Regarding the political crisis in Ukraine, Steinmeier stressed that "both of us are not satisfied with the situation. Despite all efforts, there are violations of the ceasefire and the security situation in eastern Ukraine is still not stable."

Speaking on Syria, both ministers noted that "we have not moved on that issue so far during the last five years of the civil war as we have managed to do now." "After two meetings in Vienna as well as agreements that we have reached in Munich in February, for the fist time we are able to provide hundreds of thousands of people, who were cut off from any supplies in Syria, with food and water. Also for the first time we believe in the political process."

Moreover, a joint agreement for the support of young Russian and German scholars was signed between the heads of the Association of Leading Russian Universities and German Academic Exchange Service or DAAD, in the presence of both ministers. The German-Russian youth exchange year will be held from June 2016.
