Russia: Flowers laid to commemorate crash victims at Rostov-on-Don Airport

Mourners laid flowers, candles and other items to commemorate the 62 victims of the crashed FlyDubai flight FZ981 outside Rostov-on-Don Airport on Saturday. Emergency service teams are limiting access to the terminal where grieving relatives are being comforted by counsellors.

Debris of the crashed plane litters the airport runway as Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations (EMERCOM) teams get to work at the scene of the disaster.

Poor weather is a likely principle cause of the plane crash, Rostov Region Governor Vasily Golubev said in a statement to the press earlier in the day. Other reports state that pilot error and technical failure are also likely causes of the disaster. Golubev confirmed that 62 persons - "55 passengers and seven crew members" - had died in the catastrophe.

The FlyDubai passenger Boeing 737-800 travelling from Dubai crashed near the runway on its second landing approach early on Saturday morning. Ambulances and police arrived at the airport with EMERCOM teams also deployed to sift through the wreckage and secure the scene of the crash.

Rostov-on-Don Airport is closed until midnight on Saturday with inbound flights having been redirected to alternative airports in Sochi, Krasnodar, and Mineralnye Vody, said Olga Ladeyschikova, deputy director of strategic communication at the airport. "Passengers who were due to depart from us [from Rostov-on-Don Airport] will be transported by ground transportation to the airport in the city of Krasnodar and then taken to their destination cities," she stated.
