Belgium: Turkey and EU agree to return 'illegal' migrants - Davutoglu confirms
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu announced that a deal had been struck between Turkey and the EU whereby "illegal" migrants arriving in Greece will be deported back to Turkey in return for financial aid, his comments come following a meeting with European leaders in Brussels on Friday.
"We agreed that in order to discourage human smugglers and encourage legal migration, we have come up with a balanced approach" said Davutoglu. He went on to add that "Turkey will be getting all those who are crossing over to the Aegean Islands illegally and meanwhile Europe will receive the same number of legal migrants from Turkey."
The agreement where European countries will take in one Syrian refugee directly out of Turkey for every refugee returned from Greece will come into place on March 20.
The EU has offered Turkey €6 billion ($6.7 billion) once an initial €3 billion ($3.3 billion) that was agreed to in November 2015 is spent.
