Switzerland: Syrian delegation discuss "basic principles for a political solution" to crisis
The head of the Syrian Government Delegation in Intra-Syrian talks in Geneva, Bashar al-Jaafari, held a press briefing in the UN's Geneva headquarters on Friday. He expressed his confidence that the "basic principles" for negotiations can be put in place.
Al-Jaafari said that "we believe that the implementation of these points, which we have called the basic principles, will lead to constructive Intra-Syrian talks that will help to build the future for our country."
A new round of intra-Syria talks began in Geneva on Monday, March 14. Negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition forces were suspended on February 3 and resumed after a cessation of hostilities came into effect on February 27. Despite occasional reports of violations, the truce is said to be generally holding. The main goal of the intra-Syria negotiations, which are due to continue through to March 24, is to ultimately end the five-year conflict in Syria.
