Russia: Putin chairs Security Council on military withdrawal from Syria
Russian President Vladimir Putin met with the permanent members of Russia's Security Council in Moscow, Thursday, to discuss the withdrawal of Russian Forces from Syria.
During the meeting, the council members stated that Russia's decision to withdraw most of its military from Syria contributed to the peace process and further political dialog between all parties of the Syrian conflict.
The meeting was attended by Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Chief of the Presidential Administration of Russia Sergei Ivanov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, among others.
Earlier on Thursday, commenting on the troops that will remain in Syria, Putin noted that their main task would focus on "monitoring the compliance of the ceasefire and creating a basis for intra-Syrian political dialogue."
The Russian Air Force began its operations in Syria on September 30, 2015, after receiving an official request for assistance from Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu to begin the withdrawal of Russian forces from Syria starting from Tuesday.
