Brazil: Protesters decry Lula’s appointment to chief of staff
Brazilians took to the streets in Sao Paulo on Wednesday night to protest President Dilma Rousseff’s decision to name her predecessor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, chief of staff. Lula da Silva is currently under investigation on corruption charges while President Rousseff is herself facing impeachment proceedings.
Although Lula da Silva has now been appointed to the number two position in Brazil’s government, Rousseff confirmed that he may still be prosecuted by Brazil’s Supreme Court.
The recent scandals involving the current and former presidents, as well as Brazil’s worsening economic crisis have provoked widespread mistrust from the public towards the government and have sparked frequent protests across the country.
