Spain: Thousands rally against EU-Turkey draft refugee deal in Madrid

Some 5,000 protesters gathered in Sol Square, Madrid, to rally against the EU-Turkey draft deal on refugees, Wednesday. Protesters held signs reading “EU shame” and “nobody is illegal,” as well as listening to speeches from pro-refugee campaigners and refugees.

President of European Trade Union Confederation, Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, said “We are against decisions that have been taken by the EU and their states; that are unable to find a satisfactory decision compatible with the drama of the situation.”

Ahmed, a refugee who has settled in Spain, addressed protesters, declaring “today we are here to denounce this preliminary agreement as illegal, immoral and inhuman,” adding that “no one chooses to be a refugee, nobody likes to leave home."

European leaders are still to finalise and seal the agreement, which is aimed for completion during a European Council summit due to take place in Brussels on March 17-18.

The deal stipulates that one Syrian refugee be resettled in the EU for every Syrian refugee returned to Turkey, while aid from the EU to Turkey for handling the refugee crisis will be doubled from three to six billion euros. The EU also agreed to accelerate the visa liberalisation deal with Turkey, as well as speed up Turkey's EU accession negotiations.

The United Nations has expressed concern over the legality of the deal and the potential damage to human rights the deal may entail.
