German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited the CeBIT technology trade fair in Hannover on Tuesday. With this years' country partner being Switzerland, her tour started at the Swiss stand where she was welcomed by Swiss companies and Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann.

In a statement Merkel underlined the importance of bilateral trade relations with Switzerland. "Germany and Switzerland have a trade volume of 90 million euro, this places it third among non-EU member states after the US and China," she said. "This shows how close our economic relations are," she added.

The German chancellor was guided around several stands, including that of Link 11, Microsoft and Brother International.

CeBIT is one of the world's largest computer and IT trade fairs, hosting around 3,300 companies from 70 countries this year. It takes place from March 14-18 at the Hannover Congress Centrum.
