Berlin Senator for Interior Affairs and Sport, Frank Henkel, visited the scene of a suspected car bomb explosion which killed the driver, on Bismarck Street in Berlin's Charlottenburg district on Tuesday.

Police officers and forensic experts continued to work at the scene of the blast which happened at around 08:00 local time. An eyewitness at the scene said: "Around 7.50am I was driving in the direction of the German opera house and I wanted to turn down the street and park when I saw two cars driving down this street stop sharply, one of them was a BMW, and I heard the sound of the explosion." The witness added, "I thought that it was just an explosion, I didn't think it was a car."

Frank Henkel stated that initial indications point to the possibility of an "organised crime" group being behind the explosion.

The VW Passat was completely demolished, with emergency teams redirecting traffic at the junction where the explosion occurred. Investigators are yet to reveal the cause of the blast with officers currently at the scene to examine the vehicle for explosives.
