Iraq: Thousands stage anti-government protest in central Baghdad

Iraq, Baghdad
March 11, 2016 at 17:12 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of people gathered in Tahrir Square in central Baghdad to protest against alleged corruption in the Iraqi government and call on Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi to form a new cabinet, Friday.

Anti-government protests have been ongoing since the beginning of August in the Iraqi capital and the southern cities of Basra, Najaf, Babil and Nasiriya. During the period that Iraqis have been protesting, some officials have been dismissed and arrest warrants have been issued for others. Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi also announced a package of reforms to fight corruption, cancelling what he deemed to be unnecessary government positions, reduced financial expenses and protection from legal pursuit for officials.

The protesters' demands are backed by religious authorities in the country, primarily in the fight against corruption, but also to stress the need to eliminate sectarian favouritism in the government and calling for the prime minister himself to have more power.
