Greece: Hundreds march against social reforms, pension cuts
Hundreds of activists took to the streets of central Athens to protest against EU-imposed social security reforms and pensions cuts. The rally was attended by members of the private sector unions ADEDY and GSEE, as well left-wing Popular Unity party and other leftist groups.
"The austerity junta should end in our country," said Popular Unity leader Panagiotis Lafazanis. He went to comment on the Aegean dispute with Turkey by stressing that Greece "cannot handle another memorandum of grey-zoning of the Aegean, which Turkey wants to impose through NATO."
Over 60 percent of Greeks voted to reject austerity measures in a referendum last year; however the Syriza government eventually caved in to euro zone pressure and accepted new austerity measures in return for the release of much-needed funds. Pensions have been cut 11 times since 2010.
