Greece: Refugees brave Idomeni rain as Macedonia completely shuts border
Heavy rain worsened already tough living conditions at the refugee camp near Idomeni, Wednesday, where around 14,000 refugees and migrants remain stranded as Macedonian authorities completely closed the border with Greece, according to reports. The Interior Ministry of Macedonia released a statement saying no refugees had entered the country from Greece on Tuesday.
The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and Doctors Without Borders are not able to provide help to all the refugees, whose numbers are increasing every day. The camp is littered with rubbish due to a lack of cleaning personnel while sanitary conditions are deteriorating.
Many of the camp's residents are being forced to sleep rough due to a lack of tents, despite staff from Doctors Without Borders having constructed tents to house many hundreds of the site's inhabitants.
Refugees have waited desperately to cross the Macedonian-Greek border for days after Macedonian authorities closed their side of the border crossing last week. Around 35,000 refugees and migrants are currently trapped in Greece, according to UNHCR.
