Spain: EU is accomplice to Turkey's repression politics - Deported Spanish politician

Popular Unity Candidacy party deputy Mireia Vehi gave an interview from Barcelona, Tuesday, after she was deported by the Turkish state while trying to reach the south eastern city of Diyarbakir.

Vehi was accompanied by a feminist activist from Sabadell and they were expected to attend a festivity on the occasion of the International Woman's day as a part of a larger international delegation. During their layover in Istanbul, they were detained and were allegedly denied the right to contact relatives and legal representatives. They were kept in custody for 17 hours before being deported back to Spain.

Vehi also gave her opinion on the reasons behind their deportation, claiming that they are "political reasons; preventing international observers from going to Diyarbakir. Observers that could see what the Turkish State is doing with the Kurdish people. They are maintaining repression politics. Persecution and annihilation politics with the European Union's complicity."

Diyarbakir has been at the heart of Turkish security forces' large-scale military operation in south-eastern Turkey, which began on December 14. The military operation involved imposition of curfews on Kurdish cities, aerial bombing, and mass detention in areas of unrest. According to the Turkish Human Rights Foundation (TIHV), at least 198 civilians - including 39 children - have died in combat areas under curfew since August 2015.
