Greece: Humanitarian crisis intensifying at Idomeni - UNHCR spokesperson
A spokesperson for the UN Refugee Agency said Europe needs to "wake up" to the humanitarian crisis developing on the Greek-Macedonian border, in a statement delivered to journalists at Idomeni refugee camp on Monday.
"What Europe needs to wake up to is that there is a humanitarian crisis here, in Greece, and they cannot cope, they need help," said Babar Baloch.
"And these desperate people who have been spending night after night, hoping that they will be able to get across or at least hoping that there will be help, they need an answer - a quick answer," he added.
More than 13000 refugees have gathered at the Idomeni camp in northern Greece, the majority hoping to cross the border to Macedonia and continue their journey onwards via the 'Balkan route' to northwestern Europe. Refugees can wait over 10 days to cross the border, and each day Macedonian authorities allow just a few dozen refugees to enter the country.
