Turkey: Clashes erupt in Istanbul as police storm Zaman HQ

Turkey, Istanbul
March 5, 2016 at 00:17 GMT +00:00 · Published

Turkish police stormed the Zaman headquarters in Istanbul, Friday, shortly after using water cannon and tear gas on protesters gathered outside the building.

Demonstrations began in front of Zaman's headquarters earlier on Friday after the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office requested a trustee panel be appointed to the media group. Reports indicate that the prosecutor's order also involves forcing the company into administration, leading supporters to gather outside the headquarters in a bid to prevent bailiffs and security forces from entering.

The protesters are calling for freedom of expression in Turkey to be upheld amid fears that the administrative order could restrict what Zaman can publish.

Zaman is openly critical of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as well as being closely linked with writer Fethullah Gulen who currently resides in the US following his self-imposed exile. Gulen was blamed by Erdogan for the results of the 2013 corruption scandal that saw 52 people arrested, the majority of whom had ties to the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
