Greece: 'Do not come to Europe,' EU's Tusk tells economic migrants

Greece, Athens
March 3, 2016 at 14:39 GMT +00:00 · Published

President of the European Council Donald Tusk stated bluntly that economic refugees would not be welcome in Europe during a joint presser with Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras in Athens, Thursday.

During the press conference, Tusk warned “illegal, economic migrants” from travelling to the EU.

He urged them, “Do not come to Europe. Do not believe the smugglers. Do not risk your lives and your money. It is all for nothing.”

Tusk acknowledged the unique challenge that Greece faces regarding the refugee crisis, but said that the solution would not be found by excluding the country from Schengen, “Greece is part of Schengen, of the Euro area and of the European Union and will remain so.”

Donald Tusk embarked on a diplomatic tour of Central Europe, the Balkans and Greece on Tuesday, to address the refugee crisis in view of the upcoming EU-Turkey Summit slated for March 7. So far he has visited Austria, Slovenia and several other Balkan states while he will head to Ankara later on Thursday to meet with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu.

According to UN figures, nearly 102,000 refugees have arrived in Greece in 2016, in addition to the 856,000 who arrived in 2015.

The European Commission announced Wednesday the emergency release of €700 million ($760 million) to be given to member states in order to tackle the humanitarian crisis.
