Belgium: EU declares €700 million aid initiative to deal with refugee crisis
European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides announced from Brussels, Wednesday, that the EU will be providing a total of €700 million ($1.1 billion) in humanitarian assistance over the next three years to help countries deal with the refugee crisis.
Commenting on the proposal, Stylianides said that "we must address the humanitarian needs now, within our borders" adding that €300 million ($325 million) will be available "immediately" for 2016, with a further €400 million ($434 million) over the next two years.
Stylianides went on to state that the funds will allow the European Union to compliment "humanitarian activities" in member states, whose administrative and financial response capacities are "overwhelmed." The funds are set to provide refugees with their "basic needs" and will allow the European Union to compliment humanitarian activities through "solidarity and humanity" added Stylianides.
