France: Police fire teargas as refugees block trucks over camp eviction

France, Calais
March 1, 2016 at 02:01 GMT -00:00 · Published

Chaotic scenes erupted near the Calais 'Jungle' camp on Monday, after recently evicted refugees tried to block passing lorries travelling on the motorway. A large deployment of police were called to the scene who attempted to disperse the group using flash grenades and tear gas.

The clashes come following a day of confrontations between police and refugees after authorities began dismantling parts of the camp.

Authorities reportedly arrived at the refugee camp first thing Monday morning, informing residents that they had to leave the area within the hour, or face arrest. Construction workers started dismantling the tents and makeshift shelters, with an estimated 20 shelters having been taken apart at the time of writing.

Last Thursday, a local court ruled that the southern part of the camp be demolished. French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve stated that the local government would cooperate with activists who are helping to accommodate those refugees left without homes.

Thousands of migrants and refugees have been left stranded in Calais over the past year as they await an opportunity to cross the English Channel into the United Kingdom. Around 6,000 refugees and migrants are currently living in and around Calais as plans continue to reduce numbers in the camp and relocate them across the country, or deport them back to their countries of origin.
