Justice Peter McClellan, Chair of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse (English): "Thank you. Place the Bible down. Yes Ms. Furness."

Gail Furness, Senior Council (English): "Tell the Royal Commission your full name."

Cardinal George Pell, Treasurer of the Vatican (English): "George Pell."

Gail Furness, Senior Council (English): "And your current position Cardinal?"

Cardinal George Pell, Treasurer of the Vatican (English): "As you stated it, Prefect for the economy here in the Vatican."

Gail Furness, Senior Council (English): "And that position I think was established in February, 2014?"

Cardinal George Pell, Treasurer of the Vatican (English): "It was."

Gail Furness, Senior Council (English): "What is your function as Prefect of the secretariat, Cardinal?"

Cardinal George Pell, Treasurer of the Vatican (English): "Something equivalent to the treasurer."

Gail Furness, Senior Council (English): "So the treasurer for the Vatican? Is that right?"

Cardinal George Pell, Treasurer of the Vatican (English): "Yes, for the Holy See."

Gail Furness, Senior Council (English): "And is it the case that you have a delegation of some sort to be able to expend funds on behalf of the Vatican? Or is your remit unlimited?"

Cardinal George Pell, Treasurer of the Vatican (English): "My remit is certainly not unlimited. I answer to the council for the economy, an international body of 15 Cardinals and seven lay people. They are something like the university senate, to whom I must answer."

Gail Furness, Senior Council (English): "Now Cardinal, you're often described as the number third person in the Vatican. Is that accurate?"

Cardinal George Pell, Treasurer of the Vatican (English): "I wouldn't say it was, people like to make these hypothetical lists. Some people would see the financial affairs of the Vatican as very low on the list."

Vatican Treasurer and Australian Cardinal George Pell gave evidence to an Australian commission into child sexual abuse from a hotel in Rome via video link, Monday, in response to allegations surrounding the Catholic Church in Australia.

Footage from the Royal Commission shows the Cardinal being sworn in by the Chair of the 'Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse,' Justice Peter McClellan, before answering basic questions about his background and role at the Vatican to the commission's Senior Council, Gail Furness.

Cardinal Pell is not facing charges or accused of sexual abuse, but is being questioned about the extent of his knowledge of child abuse, which occurred during the 70s and 80s in the city of Ballarat in Australia's state of Victoria, where the Cardinal was a priest.

During his time in Ballarat, Cardinal Pell resided in a seminary alongside the notorious Gerald Ridsdale, a priest who committed over 130 sexual offenses against young boys at a school between the 60s and 80s.
