Activists gathered in Washington DC to pay their respects to Concepcion "Connie" Piccioto, a woman who conducted the longest protest ever in front of the White House over thirty five years. Piccioto passed away last month after battling several health issues during the last years of her life.
Those gathered at today's ceremony remembered Piccioto's legacy of dissent and her struggle against the USA's nuclear proliferation strategy. People at the memorial service remembered her commitment to activism. Max Obuszewski, an activist from National Campaign of Nonviolent Resistance recollected, "I went to so many demonstrations at the White House and around Lafayette Park and Connie was always there, getting the message out.
Following the memorial service, Piccoto's ashes were spread outside of a Lutheran church in the capital. Immediately afterwards, dozens of the attendees marched towards the White House to hold a vigil in her honour.
