Serbia: Thousands protest Assembly of Kosovo debate on new president

Serbia, Pristina
February 26, 2016 at 14:59 GMT +00:00 · Published

Thousands of protesters took to the streets of Pristina, Friday, to demonstrate against a session of the Assembly of Kosovo at which a new president is due to be elected.

Protesters gathered in front of centrally-located government buildings where an opposition protest camp has been established. From there, demonstrators moved to the Assembly building 200 metres (656 feet) down the road where they chanted "Out!" and booed the police and Assembly members, who are debating whether to choose Hashim Thaci as president of the self-proclaimed Republic of Kosovo.

Pro-government supporters attempted to disrupt the protest but were stopped by the police who stood between them and the anti-government protesters. There have been no reports of violence so far.

Inside the Assembly building, members of the opposition Vetevendosje (Self-Determination) movement reportedly deployed tear gas. After a short break, the Assembly then continued its work.

As well as opposing the election of a new president, protesters also demand that the self-proclaimed government cancel an agreement with Serbia on forming a Serbian municipalities association in the region, and annul an agreement with Montenegro concerning border demarcation.
