Germany: Mark Zuckerberg presented with first Axel Springer Award

Germany, Berlin
February 26, 2016 at 00:05 GMT +00:00 · Published

The founder and CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg attended a presentation in Berlin on Thursday evening to receive the first ever Axel Springer Award. There to present the award was president of the European Parliament Martin Schulz.

During the presentation, Schulz praised Zuckerberg's innovation, comparing him to inventors such as Thomas Edison and Karl Benz. He also praised Zuckerberg's decision to leave 99% of his net worth to charity.

However, during his speech, Schulz also offered words of caution regarding Facebook's controversies over user privacy. With reference to Berlin's history, Schultz expressed the concerns of many Germans over privacy online, "People here in Berlin experienced first hand what it means when they try to look into people's hearts and minds. This is unacceptable and this is why they suspicion that large firms are in cahoots with state intelligence services have brought such feelings of mistrust back to the surface."

Germany has over 27 million users of Facebook, with around 1.6 billion users worldwide, making Facebook the largest social networking website in the world.
