Russia: Zakharova slams German hypocrisy over accusations of media 'bias'

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova hit out at recent statements made by German officials regarding Russia's alleged media "bias" against Germany during a weekly press briefing in Moscow, Thursday.

"The German leading mass media are conducting extremely negative information politics against Russia including statements that Russia is caring out biased politics against Germany in general and against German Chancellor Angela Merkel in particular," she stated. Zakharova added that "our German colleagues don't call such politics 'biased.' Moreover, they don't check their mass media and don't direct them how to cover what is happening in Russia."

Zakharova went on to note that German mass media believe that they "can write anything about Russia, anything you want, without paying any attention to whether it is true or not." "They call it freedom of speech," she added.

Rejecting the allegations that Russia are conducting a campaign against Germany, Zakharova stated that "There are particular stories on particular, very concrete issues, written by specific authors. Excuse me, but if that is the reality, if these incidents are happening in Germany, why should we not be allowed to cover them? Thus freedom of speech does not work vice versa. It is then called 'bias.'"
