Scores of refugees were bussed into Diavata, Wednesday, to take up residence in a newly-opened refugee camp in the north-eastern Greek town.

The camp, constructed on the site of a former Greek Army base, has been the subject of protests in the recent past from concerned local residents.

The camp will act as a refugee 'hotspot', or reception centre, where claims for asylum can be processed and successful applicants resettled across the European Union member states.

According to UN figures, nearly 102,000 refugees have landed on Greek shores in 2016 in addition to the 856,000 that arrived in 2015.
