Helpers made the final preparations for the first LGBT only refugee shelter in Berlin-Treptow on Monday, a day ahead of its opening.

The first 18 refugees will move into three shared flats on Tuesday, while 122 others are set to follow within the upcoming weeks. The shelter was initiated by 'Schwulenberatung Berlin,' an aid group by and for LGBT people.

"Many refugees approached us and asked for help as the situation in the public shelters became unbearable. Many report discrimination, offences, being spat on, and cases of violence. They were beaten, kicked and abused. Some were threatened with rape and murder and we even had cases where the abuse could have led to death," Stephan Jakel, a spokesperson of the organisation stated.
