USA: BLM crash Chinese-American demo for convicted NYPD officer Liang
Thousands of Chinese Americans rallied at Cadman Plaza Park in Brooklyn, Friday, demanding what they see as justice for NYPD officer Peter Liang after he was convicted of second degree manslaughter for the killing of Akai Gurley. Liang will face up to 14 years in prison.
Tensions flared as the pro-Liang rally was met by a counter-protest by BlackLivesMatter (BLM) activists. BLM demonstrators hit out at the police officer’s defenders for supporting the man who killed African-American Gurley while he was unarmed. One protester shouted across a police cordon "You should be fighting for equality but you're not. You're fighting against blackness."
The Liang supporters claimed the killing was an accident and accuse the court of racially profiling Liang.
Liang killed the unarmed twenty-eight-year old in the stairwell of Gurley’s apartment block on November 20, 2014, when he fired a shot that ricocheted off a wall and struck Gurley in the chest.
