Ukraine: Right-wing protesters pitch tents on Maidan Square

Ukraine, Kiev
February 20, 2016 at 20:39 GMT +00:00 · Published

Right-wing activists, some of whom are reportedly from the Right Sector Ukrainian nationalist group, prepared to spend the night sleeping on Independence Square (Maidan Square), central Kiev, on Saturday evening.

The protesters were in Maidan to mark the events of two years ago when the Euromaidan movement overthrew the democratically-elected government of Viktor Yanukovych, and the bloody confrontations between police and protesters which took place as the civil unrest unfolded.

The activists pitched tents, and collected wood and provisions for the long and cold night. Speakers addressed the crowd of a few hundred from a makeshift stage, calling for the resignation of Prime Minister Arsenei Yatseniuk who narrowly survived a no confidence vote in the Ukrainian Parliament on Friday.

The Euromaidan protests began on November 21, 2013, and escalated on November 30, leading to the removal from power of former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych. More than 100 people are believed to have died during violence in Kiev between February 19 and 21, 2014.
