Switzerland: No boots on the ground in Syria without collective action - Turkish UN Rep.

Turkey will allegedly not put boots on the ground in Syria without collective action, claimed Permanent Representative of Turkey to the UN Yasar Halit Cevik in Geneva following Friday's closed-door Security Council meeting on the Syrian crisis.

Turkey would only send ground forces into Syria if they were back by either a Security Council resolution or by the international coalition of which they are part, said Cevlik.

Fielding questions on why the Turkish government is continuing to shell Kurdish forces in north-eastern Syria, Cevlik claimed that it was not attacking Kurds, but Democratic Union Party (PYD) forces, a Kurdish militia. Alleging that the group was a terrorist organisation, the Turkish diplomat stated that the group is "not fighting regime or Daesh, the area that they captured is not from Daesh or al-Nusra," but captured from the so-called moderate Syrian opposition.

Speaking on NATO's role in Turkey's military movements over their south-eastern border, Cevlik said "of course they are following closely…but at this stage, there is no room or requirement for NATO involvement in the situation."
