Belgium: No state should impede Europe's 'advance' - Hollande

Belgium, Brussels
February 18, 2016 at 17:16 GMT +00:00 · Published

The leaders and heads of states of several European nations and institutions, including Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras of Greece, President of the European Parliament Martin Schulz and French President Francois Hollande, arrived at the headquarters of the European Council in Brussels, Thursday, ahead of crucial talks between EU leaders.

On the agenda for discussion at the two-day session are the refugee crisis and the United Kingdom's membership of the European Union.

"I hope more than anything that Europe is able to advance and is able to be stronger. No one, and no head of government or head of state, should be able to impede that," Hollande told reporters with regards to negotiations between the EU and United Kingdom on the latter's demands for reforms to the Union.

Schulz was optimistic that the various parties could "tomorrow agree the basis of the drafted text." Though the German conceeded that there are "remaining problems" with the proposals made by the United Kingdom.

"The solution to the refugee crisis is not building fences and promoting racism in Europe, the future of Europe is not walls and xenophobia," contributed Tsipras on the topic of the refugee and migrant crisis, which is particularly affecting the eastern Mediterranean country.
