
Netherlands: Mounted police protect Westland town hall from anti-refugee rally
Several hundreds of anti-refugee protesters gathered outside Westland council building, Tuesday, to demonstrate against municipality plans to use a local hotel to accommodate 275 refugees. The rally took place as local council members were holding an emergency debate regarding the arrival of asylum seekers.
The protesters held anti-refugee banners and chanted slogans including ‘Hop hop hop, immigration stop’. The local council building was cordoned off with dozens of riot police as well as mounted police.
Westland City Council plans to accommodate the asylum seekers in Poland Hotel in Wateringen, with protesters decrying the proposals, calling for stricter border controls into the Netherlands and Europe.
