Israel: Ex-PM Olmert begins prison sentence for corruption
Former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert arrived at the Maasiyahu prison in Ramla, Monday, to begin a 19-month jail sentence for bribery and obstruction of justice.
In March 2014 Olmert was found guilty of accepting a $129,000 (€115,106) bribe from a group of real estate developers and a $15,416 (€13,692) bribe from another group of developers during his time as the mayor of Jerusalem.
The 70-year-old was originally handed a six-year sentence, but it was reduced to 18 months in December after the Supreme Court cleared him of the charge connected to the $129,000 (€115,106) bribe. An extra month was then added to his sentence for obstruction of justice, after the former prime minister admitted to trying to persuade his ex-secretary to not testify against him.
Olmert said that he “rejects outright” the bribery charges; in a video he released to press hours before he was due to begin his sentence.
