SOT, Dilek Ocalan, niece of the PKK chief Abdullah Ocalan (Kurdish): "Because of the massacre that happened in Cizre, in Sur, in Kurdistan, we believe that Turkey will be tried and punished for commiting a crime against humanity and a war crime."

About 8,000 people took part in a pro-Kurdish rally near the Meinau stadium in Strasbourg, Saturday, decrying the Turkish government’s campaign in the Kurdish majority town of Cizre.

The protesters marched with Kurdish flags and banners with pictures of imprisoned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) head Abdullah Ocalan. The protesters demanded once again the release of their Ocalan who has been imprisoned by the Turkish government since 1999.

The protest comes as around 60 people were reportedly killed in the basement of a Cizre building after Turkish security forces conducted raids in the Kurdish town earlier in the month.

The raids were targetting militants from the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the basement was believed to be the hideout of high-ranking members of the group.

Turkish security forces have undertaken a large-scale military operation in south-eastern Turkey, which began on December 14 and has involved the imposition of curfews on Kurdish cities, aerial bombing, and mass detention in areas of unrest. According to the Turkish Human Rights Foundation (TİHV), at least 198 civilians – including 39 children – have died in combat areas under curfew since August.
