Ukraine: OSCE officials investigate reports of shelling in Donetsk
Officials from the OSCE Special Monitoring Mission to Ukraine travelled to the western outskirts of Donetsk, Friday, to investigate reports that the area came under shelling on Thursday evening.
Local residents claimed that the district had been hit by an artillery barrage that began on Thursday evening and lasted until Friday morning. One of the residents, Ludmila Panchenko, showed the monitors her burnt out garage, saying that "it [gunfire] started getting closer and closer and then some heavy shells fell."
The observers examined homes, buildings, and the surrounding area to gather evidence of the suspected attack, while also conducting interviews with local residents.
Currently there are calls for UN peacekeepers to be deployed with OSCE personnel already on the ground monitoring the delicate but mostly respected ceasefire, brokered between Kiev and the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic (DPR/DNR) and Lugansk People's Republic (LPR/LNR) in the country's eastern region.
