Germany: Syria talks must end 'spiral of violence'- Steinmeier

"Either we will find a way out from this spiral of violence or Syria will sink in violence, terror and civil war," German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said following the International Syria Support Group (ISSG) meeting in Munich early on Friday morning.

"This is the reason why we have come today together with Americans and Russians as well as a lot of foreign ministers in Munich, in order to find approaches to mitigate the war," he stated, adding that "everyone we need has arrived here."

Steinmeier stressed that "it was not only long, but a tough meeting." "Whether it was a breakthrough or not, we will see in the upcoming days," he added.

The ISSG met on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Thursday. The meeting set the stage for the next phase in UN-brokered intra-Syrian talks. The talks in Geneva were suspended on February 10. They are set to resume again on February 25, if all parties agree to attend.

The ISSG consists of 17 nations and major powers, including the Syrian government, Germany, Iran, France, Jordan and the United Nations as well Russian and the US.

The conflict in Syria began in March 2011. Since it began it has claimed the lives of over 260,000 people and displaced almost half the country's population.

The 52nd MSC is taking place in Munich between February 12 and 14. The conference has become the major global forum for discussions on security policy. Each February, it brings together more than 450 senior decision-makers from around the world, alongside foreign and defence ministers, and often heads-of-state. Key topics will be the Syrian conflict and the situation in the Middle East with the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/SIL). The global refugee crisis and the fight against terrorism will also be among the top issues at this year's conference.
