Germany: ISSG task forces to be launched, confirm Kerry and de Mistura

Germany, Munich
February 12, 2016 at 01:43 GMT +00:00 · Published

UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura and US Secretary of State John Kerry announced that International Syria Support Group (ISSG) task forces will be set up on Friday, speaking at a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov following the ISSG meeting in Munich on Friday morning. The task force will have a "constant convening possibility," the UN envoy explained.

Kerry said, "Today we specifically decided on a process, on a time frame, and we all agreed to do everything that we can to meet that" with "two task forces, one working on the humanitarian deliveries, the other working on the modalities of the cessation of hostilities."

According to him, "we're doing everything in the power of diplomacy to try to bring an end to this conflict in a way that results in a unified, not sectarian, minority protecting and a secular whole state. That's a complicate task." He went on saying that "there is no change in the American position" as it has always been "that we need a legitimate political process" that "is dealing with the resolution of the government transition under the Geneva process."

The ISSG met on the sidelines of Munich Security Conference (MSC) on Thursday. The meeting set the stage for the next phase in UN-brokered intra-Syrian talks. The talks in Geneva were suspended on February 10. They are set to resume again on February 25, if all parties agree to attend.
