Russia: Lavrov slams "unilateral egoistic line" on Syria that benefits some

Russian Federation, Moscow
February 9, 2016 at 22:38 GMT +00:00 · Published

The Russian Federation has consistently pursued a foreign policy anchored in and approved by the conception of Russian President Vladimir Putin, which requires us to be guided by the interests of ensuring the security of the country in close cooperation with all states willing to do so on an equal footing, based on respect for international law and, above all, the central role of the UN. Consistent with this collective approach, considering the interests of all members of the international community, we managed to do a lot in the past year. We have reached an agreement for the settlement of Iran's Nuclear Program (INP), completed the process of chemical demilitarisation of Syria, and approved a very important document on climate change at the Paris conference.

However, it is clear that not all problems were solved last year. There are no less conflicts and crises. This is mostly due to the fact that apart from the position of the collective development of a mutually respectful partnership which is supported by most countries, there is another one, which comes from the old logic of dictatorship, that imposes views and values on everyone else, along with the necessity to dominate our world.

This position shows up negatively in a number of conflicts that we are witnessing in the Middle East and North Africa: in Iraq, Yemen, Libya, which was literally ruined by the outcome of NATO bombing in 2011. Now, unfortunately, we are seeing a similar attempt to conduct a unilateral egoistic line that extracts benefits for only one group of countries regarding the Syrian crisis. I hope that common sense will dominate all these issues and other conflict situations in Africa and in other parts of the world, I hope that we will draw the correct conclusions from the lessons of last year and will act in a mutually respectful and equal basis, founded on the recognition and implementation of the UN's central role. President Vladimir Putin gives us this sense. I am sure that all of our diplomats will strictly follow this line in the interests of our country and improve the welfare of our citizens.

I would like to congratulate all the diplomats, all who work in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Central office and in our offices in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation and in foreign establishments. Special gratitude and low bow to all our veterans that are still with us and generously pass on their experience and knowledge to the younger generation.

Happy Holiday, Dear friends!"

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov delivered his best wishes from Moscow, Tuesday, to Russia's diplomatic corps on what is their professional holiday on Wednesday. He said that "we managed to do a lot in the past year" but conceded that "it is clear that not all problems were solved."

Currently "our diplomatic service has to work in conditions when the world situation is deteriorating, there are growing threats common to all," according to Lavrov. He highlighted particularly "the threat of terrorism, other forms of organised crime, drug trafficking, climate change, food shortages in large parts of our planet."

Russia's top diplomat revealed a vision of cooperation saying that "all of these are challenges and threats which require joint efforts." That is a "foreign policy anchored in and approved by the conception of Russian President Vladimir Putin."

However, Lavrov hit out at what he described as "the old logic of dictatorship, that imposes views and values on everyone else, along with the necessity to dominate our world." He also expressed hope that in the end "common sense will dominate all these issues and other conflict situations in Africa and in other parts of the world."

The Diplomats' professional holiday was established in 2002 by Presidential decree with the date chosen to mark the ancient foreign affairs institution of Russia, Ambassadorial Prikaz, which was mentioned for the first time on February 10, 1549.
