Switzerland: Syrian officials locked in peace talks with UN envoy de Mistura
Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations Bashar Jaafari led a delegation representing the Syrian government in a meeting with UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura in Geneva, Tuesday.
The meeting between the Damascus representatives and de Mistura began around 11:00 (10:00 GMT). On Monday, representatives of the Syrian opposition's main umbrella group, the Saudi-backed High Negotiations Committee (HNC) arrived at the UN's Geneva offices to deliver their demands for the opposition to enter peace talks.
The invitations for the negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition were sent by the UN Security Council on Tuesday, January 26, with the talks expected to last for at least six months.
The main goal of the intra-Syrian negotiations is to ultimately end the five-year-old conflict in Syria, with the initial implementation of a ceasefire, an increase in first aid to civilians and the establishment of a broad opposition against the so-called Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).
