USA: Iowa volunteers push for last-minute votes as caucuses kick off

"I think he's got a really good stance, there's alot of young people who are really excited about him, just the energy is on his side at the moment, and I see that coming from alot of other candidates, I think he's got a very good chance."

Campaign volunteers in Des Moines made a last-minute push for votes on Monday in the lead-up to the caucuses, the first electoral event of the 2016 primary season.

Iowa's campaign headquarters for Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders buzzed with volunteers and staffers who were busy ringing up making last-moment pitches to potential voters. Among them, was volunteer Sam Spatino, who expects Sanders to make significant gains through young voters. "I think he's got a really good stance, there's alot of young people who are really excited about him, just the energy is on his side at the moment", he said.

Meanwhile, Republican campaigners were equally keen to sway any last-minute decisions at the office of candidate Ted Cruz. Cheri Gaval, an ardent supporter of the leader believes that he will sweep the Iowa election with a narrow but sure win. "We're going to take this by five", she claims.

Caucusing will take place across all 1,681 precincts in Iowa and are set to start at 20:00 local time (21:16 GMT). Following the caucuses, county conventions and congressional district conventions will be held, followed by the state convention in spring when national delegates are chosen.

The last polls showed Donald Trump leading the Republican race going into the Iowa caucuses, closely followed his nearest rival Ted Cruz. Meanwhile Hillary Clinton maintained a narrow lead over Bernie Sanders in the Democratic race.
