Germany: Cologne increases security for carnival after NYE assaults

Germany, Cologne
February 1, 2016 at 20:20 GMT +00:00 · Published

Following the string of sexual assaults that took place in Cologne on New Year's Eve, the city's mayor Henriette Reker and newly appointed police chief Juergen Mathies announced that special security measures were to be implemented for the annual carnival during a press conference in Cologne, Monday.

"We all share the common opinion that such accidents, which happened on the New Year's Eve, must be prevented in Cologne and other cities," Reker stated.

"The feeling of safety is very, very important. And we have done everything in order all people can have this feeling here in Cologne. However, everyone of us should remember that it is impossible to provide a 100 percent guarantee," she added.

Mathies, who replaced former police chief Wolfgang Albers after the New Year's Eve assaults, stressed that, despite the heightened security measures, "those who take part in big carnivals, events, where others drink alcohol, cannot be provided with the 100 percent security."

More than 2,000 police officers will be on duty for 'Weiberfastnacht' - the traditional first night of the carnival. Besides an increased police presence, more than 800 firefighters and paramedics will also be deployed. The Cologne Carnival kicks off on Thursday, February 4, and runs until February 9.
