Haiti: Opposition protests President Martelly and OAS intervention
Thousands of anti-government activists rallied through Port-au-Prince, Saturday, protesting what they claim is foreign intervention into domestic affairs by the Organisation of American States (OAS), while demanding President Michel Martelly's resignation.
Protesters burned tires and tried to breach police barricades, resulting in minor scuffles. A large security presence was deployed to prevent serious clashes.
The action came after the OAS adopted a resolution on sending a special mission to Haiti in a bid to prevent an escalation of the ongoing political crisis in the country. The resolution followed a corresponding request by Martelly one week before he was due to leave office, whilst elections that were scheduled for Sunday had been cancelled.
