Switzerland: UN talks with Syrian govt delegation kick-off in Geneva
UN peace talks on the Syrian crisis began in Geneva on Friday featuring Permanent Representative of Syria to the UN Bashar Jaafari. Bashar Jaafari had a one-on-one meeting with UN envoy to Syria Staffan de Mistura.
De Mistura gave a statement to the press after Friday's meeting, saying he expects the opposition delegation to arrive on Sunday. Jaafari, having promised the waiting journalists a statement, walked out after the talks without speaking to the press.
The invitations for the talks between the Syrian government and opposition were sent by the UN Security Council on Tuesday, January 26, with the negotiations expected to last for at least six months.
The main goal of the intra-Syrian negotiations is to ultimately end the five-year-old conflict in Syria, with the initial implementation of a ceasefire, an increase in first aid to civilians and the establishment of a broad opposition against the so-called Islamic State (IS; formerly ISIS/ISIL).
